Itinerary

Your Easy Rider tour begins the night before Day 1. Most operators arrange pickup from your hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM, transferring you to the overnight sleeper bus station for departure to Ha Giang City. The journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, arriving in Ha Giang around 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM.

Morning — Ha Giang City to Tam Son (approx. 45 km):

  • Meet your Easy Rider guide at a designated point in Ha Giang City at dawn
  • Freshen up, enjoy a local breakfast of pho or banh mi at a street stall
  • Begin riding north toward Tam Son through early morning mist and terraced fields
  • Pass through Bac Sum Pass for the first panoramic view of the valley

Midday — Tam Son to Quan Ba (approx. 20 km):

  • Arrive at the Gates of Heaven (Cong Troi) viewpoint — a natural stone arch framing the valley below
  • Continue to Quan Ba Twin Mountains (Nui Doi), a pair of perfectly rounded limestone hills that are among Ha Giang’s most photographed landmarks
  • Lunch at a local restaurant in Quan Ba Town — try thang co (a traditional Hmong stew) or grilled corn

Afternoon — Quan Ba to Yen Minh (approx. 45 km):

  • Ride through dense pine forests and Hmong villages draped in embroidered indigo fabrics
  • Arrive in Yen Minh Town by late afternoon for check-in at a guesthouse
  • Explore the small town market, interact with local vendors, and rest ahead of the next day’s big riding section

Overnight: Yen Minh guesthouse or small hotel basic but clean, with hot water and Wi-Fi in most properties.

Day 2 is widely regarded as the highlight of the entire Ha Giang Loop — covering the route from Yen Minh through Dong Van to the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, a stretch that consistently appears in lists of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular roads.

Morning — Yen Minh to Dong Van (approx. 50 km):

  • Depart after breakfast through a corridor of buckwheat fields (in season: October–November, these bloom into waves of pink flowers)
  • Pass Lung Cu Flag Tower, Vietnam’s northernmost point, marked by a massive national flag visible from kilometers away — a detour of roughly 24 km that most operators include as standard
  • Arrive in Dong Van, a small highland town at 1,600 meters elevation with a remarkably preserved French colonial-era stone market square

Midday — Dong Van Old Quarter:

  • Explore Dong Van Ancient Town (Pho Co Dong Van), a cluster of 19th-century stone and timber shophouses built by Chinese merchants and preserved as a national heritage site
  • Visit Vuong Palace (Dinh Thu Ho Vuong), the ancestral mansion of the Hmong king H’Mong Vuong Chi Thanh — built between 1919 and 1928 using a blend of Chinese and French architectural styles
  • Lunch in the old quarter: corn wine (ruou ngo) and local specialties such as smoked buffalo and five-color sticky rice are regional highlights

Afternoon — Dong Van to Ma Pi Leng Pass:

  • Ride the 20-kilometer stretch from Dong Van to Meo Vac that crosses Ma Pi Leng Pass — at 1,400 meters, this is one of the four great mountain passes of northern Vietnam
  • Stop at the official Ma Pi Leng viewpoint for photographs of the Nho Que River canyon 800 meters below — an almost impossibly turquoise ribbon of water cutting through dark limestone cliffs
  • This stretch takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours of riding; your guide will stop multiple times for photos and rest

Overnight: Meo Vac guesthouse or homestay. Meo Vac is a livelier town than Yen Minh, with more dining options and a small night market on weekends.

Day 3 covers the return arc of the loop, descending from the high plateau back toward Ha Giang City through a different landscape of river valleys and terraced hillsides.

Morning — Meo Vac:

  • If your departure falls on a Sunday, Meo Vac’s weekly ethnic minority market is a must-see — traders from H’Mong, Lo Lo, Giay, and Tay communities gather from surrounding villages to sell produce, textiles, and livestock
  • Breakfast in town, followed by a final look at the Nho Que River gorge from the valley floor (accessible via a short detour)

Midday — Meo Vac to Ha Giang City (approx. 150 km):

  • The return route follows a different road south, passing through Du Gia Nature Reserve and along the Mien River valley
  • Stop at Lung Tam Linen Village, where H’Mong women weave traditional flax cloth using centuries-old techniques — a craft experience rarely found on tourist circuits
  • Arrive back in Ha Giang City by late afternoon (typically 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM)

Evening — Return to Hanoi:

  • Check in to a local guesthouse or café for dinner and a shower before departure
  • Board the overnight sleeper bus back to Hanoi, departing between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM
  • Arrive in Hanoi’s Old Quarter the following morning, typically between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM
